Snow Plow Truck Service: Installation, Wiring and Repair

A plow truck has to work on the worst mornings of the year, which is exactly when a wiring fault, a weak battery or a leaking hydraulic hose shows up. Under the Bus Auto installs, wires and repairs snow plows and gets plow trucks ready for the season, on site at your home, ranch, yard or shop in Canon City, Fremont County and the surrounding high country.

Snow Plow Installation

We install plow mounts and plows on pickups and work trucks, including the vehicle-side mount, the plow-side hardware and the wiring and controls. A correct installation matters beyond convenience. The mount has to be secure, the plow lights have to work and aim properly, and the electrical system has to handle the added load without draining the battery.

Plow Wiring and Electrical Repair

Most plow failures are electrical. Connectors on the front of a truck sit in salt, slush and road spray all winter, and corrosion gradually breaks down the connection. We handle:

  • Plow wiring harness installation and replacement.
  • Plow light and headlight wiring, including switching between truck headlights and plow lights.
  • Controller and control module wiring.
  • Corroded plugs, connectors, grounds and battery cables.
  • Solenoids and motor relays.
  • Diagnosis of plows that will not raise, lower or angle.

Hydraulic Service

We service plow hydraulic units, including fluid changes, hose and fitting replacement, cylinder leaks and pump problems. Old hydraulic fluid can absorb moisture, which causes sluggish movement in cold weather and corrosion inside the unit. A fluid change before the season is cheap insurance.

Getting the Truck Ready, Not Just the Plow

A plow puts heavy load on the truck that carries it. Before plowing season we recommend checking:

  • Battery and alternator. Plow motors and lights draw heavy current. See battery and charging service.
  • Front suspension and steering. The weight of a plow wears ball joints, tie rods and front springs.
  • Brakes. A plow adds weight to the front axle and plowing means constant stopping. See brake repair.
  • Transmission fluid and cooling. Pushing snow heats the transmission.
  • Antifreeze, belts and hoses, as with any winter truck.

Plow Trucks in Fleets

Businesses, property managers and organizations with plow trucks can add them to a fleet maintenance schedule, with pre-season service in the fall and repairs during the season. See also fleet winterization and diesel and work truck maintenance.

Schedule Before the First Storm

The busiest time for plow repairs is the morning after the first big snowfall. Pre-season installation, wiring and hydraulic service in October and November avoids that rush. For more on getting any vehicle ready, see winter vehicle maintenance.
